Embrace the Bittersweet
April. The month when we begin experiencing a strange and confusing blend of emotions - sweetness and sadness, all rolled into one. Snow is melting and grass is greening up, so snowboards and skis are heading back into storage, which is sad, but days are getting longer and trails are drying out, so bikes are getting dusted off and bathing suits located, which feels oh so sweet. It’s a bittersweet time and it tugs on our hearts in a somewhat uncomfy but also comfy way.
Some examples of bittersweet moments - heading home after a lovely vacation, a rainy day, sad songs in a minor key, looking at old photographs, graduating from high school and retiring from a job you love. These bitter and sweet times are complex and conflicting but will forever be paired and although painful they are also beautiful and can lead to a boom in creativity, motivation and inspiration.
Instead of resisting the bittersweet, let’s celebrate it - knowing that sorrow leads to joy, longing to belonging, and vulnerability to strength.
