Healing Myself

Here goes. I have this thing called EoE. When we were in Hawaii in Feb, we were at dinner one night with some good friends. Food got caught in my esophagus (something that has happened for the past couple of years - or happened - pretty frequently). In our group, was a friend/nurse who told me to get it checked out. Cut to 2 months later when I met with a gastroenterologist. Endoscopy, dilation, biopsy, and then results. I found out that I have this thing called Eosinophilic Esophagitis. Dumb, super dumb.

Stay with me on this. I kind of can’t stand that I even have a health thing that I’m telling you about, but I do, so I will. Eosinophils are tiny white blood cells that are normally brought on by an allergen. Mine are only in my esophagus. I’m not sure what I’m allergic to so I’ve had to give up a bunch of foods. Monday will be my 5th week eliminating wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, fish and shellfish, nuts and tree nuts. Dumb, super dumb.

Here’s the thing, I will figure this out. In a couple of weeks I’ll go in for another endoscopy to see if the EoE is in remission. If so, I’ll begin reintroducing foods. It will probably take another 5 months to sort all of this out, but that’s what I’m ready and willing to do because I want to have an esophagus that works properly and I am unwilling to spend my life taking medication to fix things that I can fix on my own with a healthy lifestyle. If it’s wheat and dairy that I have to give up, so be it. It will be less than splendid because I REALLY love all things dairy and wheat - cheese and beer and pizza, oh shit! BUT healing my body by being steadfast and motivated and super health conscious, is number one.

My point? I’m not saying that I believe in giving up entire food groups. That’s certainly not how I coach clients. I’m all about 80/20, if you have a body that doesn’t have disease or a condition. But if you do have disease, if you have an autoimmune thing, if you’re living with chronic inflammation, if you’ve ever been smoker, if you have parents with high cholesterol or diabetes or heart disease, if you’re overweight or obese, then you should try to figure out your situation. Let’s not let life happen to us, let’s make life happen! Let’s live long, let’s think about our 80 year old self and plan and prepare for that body. Let’s eat the foods that help us feel good and healthy and thriving - and pill free. Move your body on most days, drink water, and sleep well. Because if you don’t take care of yourself now, that would be dumb, super dumb.
