Chronic Inflammation = Chronic Illness

Morning! For the past couple of weeks, I've been dealing with this annoying pain in the back of my leg. For a while, I thought that is was just a little overstretch of my hamstring but by Friday, I was having a hard time sitting down on it, which is a clear indicator that I have a pretty upset sciatic nerve. Somewhere in my bod, I have inflammation, most likely in my glute. This got me thinking about inflammation - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Good inflammation helps the body heal from an injury and fights harmful bacteria. On the flip side, bad inflammation activates the immune system and can make us sick. Eating unhealthy food, not exercising enough, and eating too much sugar turns the immune system "on" and helps it stay activated for a long period of time. Chronic inflammation leads to chronic illness. Again, chronic inflammation leads to chronic illness.

As we gain weight, some fat cells expand beyond their capacity while trying to do their job storing our extra calories as fat. When this happens, they turn on and add to the inflammation already present, sending out signals to activate the immune system. Losing weight allows the fat cells to shrink back to a more normal size and turns off those signals to the immune system.

Changing your diet and losing weight are two of the best ways to lower inflammation. Eating antioxidants, such as broccoli, kale, and berries, reduces inflammation. Consuming essential fats like salmon, flax seeds, avocados, and walnuts does the same. Adding turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and ginger are great options too! Exercising releases a burst of anti-inflammatory proteins from cells, reducing stress reduces inflammation, and getting 8 hours of sleep per night keeps your immune system strong and resilient.

Once again, chronic inflammation leads to chronic illness. Make a change today, keep your body and mind healthy by reducing your inflammation. I double dog dare you. ;) xo
