Small Steps = Big Changes

Did you know that the number of people with diabetes worldwide has jumped from 108 million in 1980 to 415 million today? In 2040, more than half a billion people will have diabetes, according to the data projections. Diabetes kills 1.5 million people every year worldwide and this number is expected to double by 2030. 1 in 3 Americans are obese and the average American is 20 pounds heavier today than in 1980. Childhood obesity rates have tripled since then as well.

Obviously, this is a very serious problem. Why are these numbers increasing? Factors such as lack of income and education, availability of healthy foods, and places to be active play a role. And to top it off, processed foods are heavily marketed and inexpensive. Not good, not good at all!

What can we do? We can try our hardest to model a healthy lifestyle for our children, our family, and our friends to see and learn from. We can get active and stay active. We can eat less sugar and more whole grains, veggies, and fruit. We can drink more water and keep on filling up our kid’s water bottles. We can manage our weight and lose a few of those extra pounds. Please do something today to help yourself and your loved ones. It doesn’t have to be big. Take your family on a hike, make a healthy and nourishing dinner, challenge yourself and sign up for a race with a friend, fill up a bowl with fresh fruit and set it out on the counter. Team SoulShine, we can make a difference, I know it! Small Steps = Big Changes.
