Mood Booster

We’ve all been there before: not enough sleep, maybe feeling a little under the weather, or having too little time. Why do we still make time for a workout then? I know! Because we feel better - both mentally and physically - after a good exercise session. We feel clear and strong and refreshed and able!

There is a connection between exercise and the brain. I know personally that without exercise I tend to not be as sweet and patient with my family and let me tell you, they know when I need to get a good sweat sesh in. Exercise is a mood booster because when you get your heart rate up, your brain releases two types of neurotransmitters - endorphins and serotonin.

Endorphins are responsible for that feel-good sensation after a solid workout and are also the body’s internal painkiller. Serotonin makes us feel good too but unlike endorphins, which block pain to produce pleasure, serotonin promotes pleasure itself.

Research has shown that a lack of serotonin in the brain is linked to depression. The most commonly prescribed anti-depressant meds work by pumping more serotonin into the brain. The good news? Research has also shown that exercise can increase brain serotonin levels. Boom!

Throw this info into your health and wellness toolbox. Let it motivate you to move your bod and get to the gym or strap on your sneaks or press play on that workout video. I’ve never heard anyone say “shit, I totally regret that workout!”. Not once. Things look much more bright and shiny after, but you know that! :)
